Justus Liebig University Giessen is a modern university with over 400 years of history. Along with its broad subject offerings – from the classical natural sciences, law and economics, social sciences and education science through to language and cultural studies – the university also offers a unique range of subjects in the life sciences – human and veterinary medicine, agricultural, environmental and nutritional sciences and food chemistry.

The legacy of its namesake Justus Liebig defines the university, both in applied research and teaching and in its international approach. Justus Liebig University Giessen has ties with around 90 universities around the world through agreements. Since 2006, the university has received funding under the Excellence Initiative (Cardio-Pulmonary System Excellence Cluster, ECCPS; International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture, GCSC).

Whether it be insect biotechnology, climate impact research, lung research, material sciences or cognitive psychology: Justus Liebig University Giessen succeeds in establishing attractive core research areas in which proposed solutions to pressing issues of the future are developed with strategic partners. Its research strengths – particularly in the key areas of cultural studies and life sciences – are demonstrated by the numerous Collaborative Research Centres, DFG Priority Programmes and Research Training Groups, LOEWE centres and core areas, leadership of the German Center for Lung Research, participation in two health research centres, and other activities. Justus Liebig University Giessen offers structured graduate training programmes.
